We human beings, by nature, are interdependent. We can’t “go it alone” — we can’t follow a separate path that excludes the rest of humanity.
But over the centuries our culture has changed. Many factors have led us to a world where, in many respects, we have drifted apart. While some may seek independence and self-sufficiency, seeing this as fundamental freedom, this comes at a cost. We may be free of the demands of others, but it brings with it solitude, isolation and even loneliness.
We must find a balance, recognizing our individual needs and personal moral responsibilities, but we also have to acknowledge our need for companionship and assistance as we navigate life.
